Food as a Fuel for Work Productivity

Nutrition is the fuel your body requires in order to be able to perform in everyday life. Food provides your body with energy and gives it the nutrients needed to function to the best of its ability. It is important to be aware of how certain foods can positively or negatively affect your mood, energy levels, and impact your productivity within the workplace. We all aim to do our best and thrive at our tasks in work each day, however it is not often that we consider the impact of what we eat and how it affects this productivity level. Our brain requires food to function and operate effectively with high concentration and attention levels.

According to an article by Harvard Business Review, “Food has a direct impact on our cognitive performance”. All the foods we eat are converted into glucose by the body which allows for the release of energy throughout the day, allowing us to concentrate and stay alert. If we don’t have enough glucose, then our bodies won’t be able to perform to the best of its ability due to a lack of energy and focus. However, certain foods release glucose differently to others and the key to a successful workday is to identify foods that provide a slow release of energy to maintain sustainable energy levels. These foods include whole grains, oats, fruits and vegetables, and keep us fuller for longer. Meal planning is an effective way to make the most out of the food you’re eating, however, choosing healthy snacks throughout the day is a great start to improving your energy levels. Having easy access to healthier snacks will ensure unhealthy snacking is reduced. Eating regularly throughout the day maintains glucose levels and allows energy to be sustained rather than spiking prior to mealtimes.

Healthy Snack Ideas to Boost Productivity

  • Blueberries
  • Bananas
  • Spinach
  • Salmon
  • Eggs
  • Nuts such as Walnuts, Almonds, Cashews
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Avocado
  • Oats

A little bit of consideration and planning when it comes to the food you eat, can reap huge rewards by boosting your mood and providing you with enough energy to get through the workday. Hydration is also important for your brain to function, allowing you to stay alert and function better. An improvement in energy levels will also allow you to enjoy your downtime after work, whether it involves staying active, socialising with friends and family, or reading a book, you can achieve more in a day in both your work and personal life.
